Gaston Christian hosted the 2018 MAC Boys Tennis Conference Tournament on Wednesday May 3, 2018. After 36 matches, featuring over 5 teams and 30 competitiors, the tournament ended with Metrolina Christian Academy taking home the trophy. Gaston Day finished second in the tournament, followed by Gaston Christian, Southlake and Hickory Grove Christian Academy. Despite having no seniors on the varsity team this year, the underclassmen finished strong. Highlights of the tournament:
Will Farris (line 1) fought hard in his first round match against the #2 seed. After winning the first set, Farris lost the second set, and came up short in the third set match tie break. Final score was 6-2, 1-6, 0-1 (7).
Andrew Nanney (line 2), seeded third coming into the tournament, upset the #2 seed from Gaston Day, winning his semi-final match in a third set match tie break. His final score was 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10). Nanney faced the #1 seed from Metrolina Christian in the finals, losing the match 1-6, 3-6.
Walker Shields (line 3) fought long and hard in his first round singles match by splitting sets, but losing in the third set match tie break. Final score: 6-4, 6-7(6), 0-1 (6).
Jonny Kuhn (line 4) fought hard in a three-set match against Metrolina Christian Academy. After a two hour battle, Kuhn came up short in the match tie break. Final Score: 7-5, 6-1, 0-1(8).
Kevin Xu (line 5) won his first round match easily (6-3, 6-2), and dropped the semi-final round match to the #1 seed.
Foster Rouse (line 6) fought hard in his first round match against his opponent from Southlake, but came up short. Final score was 4-6, 5-7.
In doubles action, the line 1 doubles team of Farris/Nanney faced a tough team from Gaston Day, losing 8-1.The line 2 doubles team of Kuhn and Shields defeated the #2 seed from Gaston Day in the semi-final round (8-6), losing in the finals to #1 seed from Metrolina. The line 3 doubles team of Xu/Rouse won their first round match 8-0, and then faced the #1 seed from Metrolina, losing 2-8.
